Day 4: Photographer Michael Cunningham

Crowns

Three Things:

  • From his official bio: “Cunningham chooses to work in black and white; this allows him to express what is in his soul.  Black and white photography is very personal, he says and reaches deep inside the viewer, making them study the photograph for what it represents outside of pretty colors.”
  • The book Crowns inspired a theatrical stage production, Crowns the Gospel Musical.
  • Cunningham has published four books: Crowns, Jewels, Queens, and Spirit of Harlem.

Allan Crite

Three things:

  1. Known as the grandaddy of the Boston art scene, Crite’s work centered around three main themes: Negro spirituals, religious themes that emphasize non-European aspects of the Bible, and every day African American life
  2. A devout Episcopalian, he classified much of his work as liturgical art
  3. His work is counted in notable collections such as the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Boston Athenaeum.

I’ll be serving as Dean for a fun-filled week of summer camp at Silver Lake Camp and Conference Center, in Sharon, Connecticut, July 17-23, 2011.

Diary of a Wimpy Camp Kid
Grades: 4 and 5 (co-ed)

What adventures will befall our fictitious camper? Falling in deer poop, dropping a retainer in the compost toilet, getting loud hiccups while saying Grace? Using journal writing, art making, readings, wacky recipes, and joke telling along with music, creative devotions, nature walks, swimming, ropes course, canoeing and other outdoor fun, together we’ll create an illustrated book of the unusual experiences of a Silver Lake Camp kid.

Register through Silver Lake Camp and Conference Center.

If cost is a barrier, I hear there are a few scholarships available. (Please contact Silver Lake directly for information, or check with your local church or community group to see if they have monies available.)
